PHILIP HICKS is a 1980 graduate of Notre Dame with a doctorate in history from Johns Hopkins. Since 1989, he has taught early-modern European history at Saint Mary’s College (Notre Dame, Indiana), where he holds the Bruno P. Schlesinger Chair in Humanistic Studies. He is the author of Neoclassical History and English Culture: From Clarendon to Hume (St. Martin’s Press, 1996) as well as several essays on eighteenth-century political and historical thought and a profile of Professor Paul Fenlon (“The Last of the Bachelor Dons,” Notre Dame Magazine, Winter 2018-19  https://magazine.nd.edu/stories/the-last-of-the-bachelor-dons/).
